September 07 , 2001 12:17PM Buddhists To View "Sacred Tooth Relic" Of Buddha In Kandy
KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 7 (Bernama) -- Large numbers of Buddhists from several countries including Malaysia are expected to travel to Kandy, Sri Lanka, later this month to view the sacred tooth relic of Buddha.
An exposition of the relic, revered by Buddhists, will he held at the Temple of the Tooth Relic (Dalada Maligawa) in Kandy between Sept 23 and Oct 5 this year, a statement from the Sri Lanka Tourism Office said today.
It said special tours were being organised by Buddhist temples in Malaysia to enable Buddhists to pay homage to the relic.
The relic being venerated at the Kandy temple, was taken to Sri Lanka from India in the fourth century during the reign of King Sri Meghawanna.
It was first brought to Anuradhapura, the then capital of Sri Lanka.
From the beginning of the "Polonnaruwa" period in Sri Lanka, the relic was considered an important and necessary asset to kingship, and the subsequent rulers began laying more emphasis on the possession of the tooth relic in order to indicate their right to the throne.
