The News Devision of the EPDP reports that the LTTE is publishing a Tamil daily newspaper “Namathu Elanadu” in Jaffna.
In 1981, the printing press publishing the daily newspaper Eelanadu in the city of Jaffna was attacked by the Sri Lankan security forces and was damaged. Late in 1988, the Eelanadu office was bombed and destroyed by the LTTE. The news editor of Eelanadu I. Shanmugalingam, popularly known as I. Shan was abducted by the LTTE and killed. This incident took place when the Indian Peace-Keeping Force was stationed in the North – East Province. Following the departure of the IPKF, President Premadasa permitted the LTTE to take over Jaffna. While the LTTE’s writ ran in Jaffna, in 1992, the Eelanadu Company was taken over by the LTTE. It is this company that publishes the new “Namathu Eelanadu”.
