Jaffna Municipal Council is once again in a dilemma in
finding a new mayor as incumbent N. Raviraj was
elected to the 12th parliament in the December 5
elections.
Jaffna Municipal Council election was held in 1998
after a lapse of 15 years and former TULF
parliamentarian V. Yogeswaran's widow Sarojini Was was
elected. But she was gunned down in May of the same
year.Pon Sivapalan was sworn in as mayor soon after
and he too was slain in September in the same year.
N. Raviraj who had been the deputy mayor since 1988
succeeded to the mayorship in December 2000 and
continue to be in office. As he has now been elected
to parliament, he would resin his mayorship at the
end of this month. Mr. Raviraj said he would convene
the Municipal Council's budget meeting today. He said
a decision as to who would be the new mayor would be
taken by his party's politburo. At present Sellan
Kandian functioned as the deputy mayor, he said.
