Jaffna Municipal Council looks for new mayor

Dec 9 (InfoLanka) Jaffna Municipal Council is once again in a dilemma in finding a new mayor as incumbent N. Raviraj was elected to the 12th parliament in the December 5 elections.

Jaffna Municipal Council election was held in 1998 after a lapse of 15 years and former TULF parliamentarian V. Yogeswaran's widow Sarojini Was was elected. But she was gunned down in May of the same year.Pon Sivapalan was sworn in as mayor soon after and he too was slain in September in the same year.

N. Raviraj who had been the deputy mayor since 1988 succeeded to the mayorship in December 2000 and continue to be in office. As he has now been elected to parliament, he would resin his mayorship at the end of this month. Mr. Raviraj said he would convene the Municipal Council's budget meeting today. He said a decision as to who would be the new mayor would be taken by his party's politburo.At present Sellan Kandian functioned as the deputy mayor, he said.
