Taken from an article by Fathima Razik Cader, for the Daily News 2003

Selected parts are in quotes.

"A pollutant as bad as any other - noise - is on the rise. And what do we Sri Lankans do apart from putting up with it? Hardly anything. In fact, most of us are guilty too, of contributing towards it. "

"in the recent past over forty complaints have been received from residents living in the vicinity of places of religious worship. Whilst appreciating the fact that Sri Lanka is a multi-religious, multi-ethnic and multi-cultural country, it is up to each ethnic group to ensure that all the others are also entitled to lead their lives devoid of disturbances. What is important is the need to be sensitive and respect another persons rights in terms of wanting peace and quiet - especially so at night."

"The laws, however, stipulate that three people should make a complaint of a given disturbance to enable the PHD to act. The police too can take action under the Penal Code but there too there must be five complainants before they can take action. "

"Though antiquated, the laws are still applicable and the authorities - be they officers of the PHD of the CMC or the police are committed towards maintaining the peace devoid of noise. "

"How then does one combat this 'menace'? - Because that's what most people call it."

Loudspeaker usage in religeous places of worship in Srl Lanka should be banned or used only on special occations.

As a person living next to one of these places of worship, it has become a total menace to me, my family and those around me(neighbours not of that religion). Being a place of worship you would expect it to respect those around it. Don't you think ?

I'm not saying ban one, what I'm saying is ban all !!!!

Pass this message around. Look at what the religious place has become to others who are offended by its sound "A Menace" This is not a term we would like our sacred place of worship to be know as, and I don't think whoever is worshipped at that place would like it either.

Think about it. Respect those around you. Don't Be a Menace

Yes the cacophonous will drive one insane in Srilanka. One can always adjust well and even enjoy a harmonious tone but cacophony does not make any sense. The worst offenders are the lottery vendors. They have a megaphone through which they blurt out and they would even interview the prospective buyers. The lanes and lanes of cars contribute immensely to the noise pollution.

I sympathize with those who had to put up with these kind of noices. Some can be avoided but some cant be.Lands are licensed according to their usage and it would be illogical to go after the fact-that is when a Temple is already built according to the terms and conditions of the land usage agreement. One should know the consequences of living in proximity to a noicy place and should be prudent enough to plan their purchase of a house.

Fine, fair enough but the place I live in used to be a very peaceful place. This religious institution has been there for sometime, but lately it has become a bit more irrespctectful of it's surroundings.
I have noticed it has got quite a bit crowd now coming to it, from the cars fairly rich ones, and from what I hear also quite powerful and influencial people. I also hear the land they have taken is illegal and they are continually claiming land, and not slow and steadily but quite rapidly. Anyway that doesn't matter but it's lack of respect to others as a religion.
Around this place of worship are a few others of different religions. I visited a few of these to see if the sound reached inside these, and guess what it did. I'm surpried no one has complained about this. I just looked around at some of the people praying and just thought won't you be annoyed, disgusted or feel insulted by this lack of respect ? You come to pray in peace and what do you get the shrils of another disturbing that peace. I find that very insulting.
What I'm saying is simple ban the loudspeakers and allow them only on special occations or festivals, and saying this doesn't mean just because it's a special occation you can put 50 loudspeakers and scream at the top of your lungs, it means follow the laws or rules of this countru and stay within limits. Don't be insulting to those around you. Respect those around you if you wish for their respect.
What do you think ?
