Iran’s Supreme Leader expressed hope that Tamil issue will be fully settled
Sri Lanka President meeting with Iran's Supreme Leader and also seen Iran's President.
Tehran, 25 November, (IRNA + Asiantribune.com): In Sri Lanka Muslims plays an effective role in the government and important policy making centers of the country, said Sri Lanka President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga in Tehran, when she met Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khameni at his office.
President Chandrika Kumaratunga called on Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khameni the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran Wednesday evening. Iran’s President Mohammed Khatami accompanied President Kumaratunga to the meeting.
Chandrika Kumaratunga, President of Sri Lanka, who is supposed to uphold Buddhism which was given a foremost place in the Country’s constitution, but she was seen wearing a headscarf from the time she landed in Tehran.
Diplomats were of the opinion that it was Sri Lanka’s President who is on a state visit to Tehran and gender does not count in state visits and it is the obligation of the Country’s President to uphold the tradition and culture of the country steadfastedly.
When the Sri Lanka President met the Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khameni, she said that she was pleased with her visit to Iran and provided a brief report on her talks with Iranian officials during her stay in Tehran.
Chandrika Kumaratunga said that followers of different religions are living in co-existence in Sri Lanka and Muslims play an effective role in the government and important policy making centers of the country.
The Sri Lankan president said that the international crises should be resolved through diplomatic means and violence will never bring solution to the problems.
Meanwhile, Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei who received the Sri Lanka President on Wednesday said that Iran and Sri Lanka should utilize the capacity for bilateral cooperation.
In a meeting with Sri Lankan President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga, and her entourage, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khameni, Supreme Leader said that there are grounds to develop Iran-Sri Lanka cooperation.
Iran’s Supreme Leader expressed pleasure with co-existence of followers of different religions in Sri Lanka and hoped that certain issues such as those concerning the Tamils will be fully settled.
He said that Iran and Sri Lanka share the same views on international issues including developments in Palestine and Iraq.
"We object to the use of force in international community and are deeply worried about the regretful humanitarian situation in Palestine and Iraq," Ayatollah Khamenei pointed out.
Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khameni deplored US invasion of Iraq and said that it is part of the US strategy for the region and that they made great mistake in doing so, because both staying and withdrawing from Iraq are harmful for the occupying troops.
The Supreme Leader renewed his concern about the disproportionate military action in Falluja and said that attacks on civilian targets would bring repercussions from the people and aggravate the situation.

Today Thursday 25 November Dr. Kamal Karazzi, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran will call on President Kumaratunga at the Boostan Palace.
The Sri Lankan leader will also schedule to meet Hashemi Rafsanjani the Chairman of the Expediency Council and former President of the Republic of Iran.
In the afternoon, the Memoranda of Understanding and bilateral agreements will be signed between the two countries at the Islamic Republic Mansion.
