A TEAM of specialists have arrived from France to train local police on ways of combating crime, The Daily Mirror reported. This came as the police department, now under the control of President Chandrika Kumaratunga, launched a fresh campaign to crack down on rising crime and seize a large number of unauthorized weapons in the hands of the public. Deputy Inspector General of Police Chandra Fernando said the French team will introduce modern scientific methods of fighting crime and recording statements. Provincial council elections in April
FIVE Sri Lankan Provincial Councils would go to polls in April next year with the exception of the Southern and North Western councils which are expected to be held later, The Daily Mirror reported. It quoted a Provincial Councils Ministry spokesman as saying the Minister Alick Aluvihare had already advised the relevant authorities to go ahead with arrangements for polls except the North East which is still administered by a Governor. Elections for the Sabaragamuwa, Western, North Central, Central and Uva Provincial Councils are scheduled to be held on April 6, the paper said.
Groups clash over PM’s poster
SRI Lankan troops were called in at the northcentral town of Galewela on Saturday after clashes broke out between two groups in a dispute over a poster of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe. “Several persons involved in the clashes were detained,” a senior policeman said. Five persons suffered injuries, he said, adding that troops were deployed in support of the police. Initial inquiries revealed the clashes followed claims that posters of the premier displayed at Galewela had been removed. Police said a lorry was set on fire while several shops were attacked.
