Government still uncertain about a proper location for vital coal plant
Alladin Hussein in Colombo, September 25, 2003, 11.21 pm. The government of Sri Lanka has decided to establish the controversial coal power plant in Hambantota, which is situated south of Sri Lanka. Successive governments over a period of a shocking 20 years have put off the construction of the vital coal plant.
Minister of Power and Energy Karu Jayasuriya said that Expression of Interest for the establishment of the plant has already been called, and the issuing of pre-qualification documents to interested parties are currently been carried out by his ministry. He however added that, even though Hambantota has been currently chosen for the construction of the coal plant, if they find a better location, they are ready for consideration.
The location for the coal plant has been merrily going around the country from Trincomalee, to Matara, to Norochcholai, and again to Trincomalee and now to Hambantota over a period of more than 20 years, since 1982, power sector officials said.
Even though initial plans by the Ceylon Electricity Board was to commission a coal power plant by the year 1989, 13 years later, however the coal plant still seems a distant dream, they said.
