Canadian Tamil Broadcasting Corp. attacked
The Canadian Tamil Broadcasting Corporation (CTBC) in Toronto was
attacked last Friday afternoon allegedly by the World Tamil Movement
(WTM) which is the LTTE's frontal organisation, Tamil political
sources said.
While the CEO of the CTBC, Kandiah Sivasothy, popularly known to his
listeners as "Ilaiyabahrathy" was on air, his broadcast was
interrupted by an unknown gang of attackers who came in a car and
threw bottles at his office, they said.
After the attack some MPs came to see him and police officers rushed
to the scene to investigate the matter. The WTM had a long standing
grudge against Ilaiyabahrathy, the sources said.
Apparently when the LTTE was banned in Canada they started to
"take-over" businesses, temples, radio stations, etc. owned by Tamils.
This was done so that they could 'legitimise' the large sum of money
they collected and also had in their possession.
They also wanted to 'take-over' the CTBC, but Ilaiyabahrathy refused
to give into their demand. As a result of this the WTM fell out with
him, they said.
A CTBC employee, Kunam, a member of the WTM, was the one who started
the CTR. He warned Ilaiyabahrathy that he would be ousted within three
years, the sources claimed.
This attack was not the only one attempted on Ilaiyabahrathy as in the
past he was shot at in his home by the WTM over a dispute regarding an
advertisement.
However, the CTBC is not the only business that has been terrorised by
the WTM as the Canada Kandasamy Temple was taken over by the WTM and
the video shop belonging to the person in charge was attacked, the
sources alleged.
Other incidents involved the torching of 'Thedakam', the Tamil Library
which apparently carried the true facts. Thayagam, a Tamil paper was
"banned" and a well known journalist, D. B. S. Jeyaraj was assaulted
in the presence of his wife and his paper Manchari was "banned", they
said. (SI)
