The Endoscopy Unit

Endoscopic Surgery

Laparoscopy and Laparoscopic Surgery

The Endoscopy Unit is doing a great service to patients ever since it was established in 1998.

There is a fully equipped therapeutic Endoscopy unit with the following
facilities

• Upper GI Endoscopy (adult and paediatric) - variceal banding,
  scelorotherapy, dilatation, stenting, PEG
• Small bowel endoscopy
• ERCP - diagnostic, stenting, CBD stone retrieval
• Colonoscopy - polypectomy
• Sigmoidoscopy

This is the only unit in Sri Lanka where the whole bowel can be visualized endoscopically.

In the Operating Theatres of this hospital the following Endoscopic surgical procedures are also performed on a regular basis

• Diagnostic Laparoscopy
• Laparoscopic Surgery including laparoscopic cholecystectomy
• Endoscopic Urological Surgery 
• Laparoscopic Gynaecological surgery including Laparoscopic hysterectomy

Endoscopic Surgery is to be further improved and developed in the near future. The development of endoscopic surgery is one of the main aims of this hospital and  it hopes to become the Center of Excellence  here in Sri Lanka, in this type of surgery.

The benefits to the patient from this form of surgery (Minimally invasive and keyhole surgery) is immense. It is also cost effective as it cuts down the hospital stay and allows patients to get back to work much earlier, thus helping the countries progress. Anyone willing to help its development can contribute through the Director of the hospital.

There are 4 operating theatres in the hospital at present. Soon, however, six more will be added when the new theatre complex is opened.
