Once lacquer is applied and the surface polished, various symmetrical designs are inscribed into the layer of laquer. Different interpretations of lotus flower is a very popular design used by most craftsmen.

Until the sixties, the sale of these products were left to the abilities of the producers, and advertising was mostly by word of mouth. But in the sixties the government took an active role in promoting local handicrafts and established a series of highly successful showrooms called "laksala", in all major cities, where the high quality local products are prominently displayed, and is readily available for the tourist as well as the local buyer.
