A SURVEY OF TRAVEL AGENTS (March 20, 1996)

This survey is ONLY about travel agents who sell airline tickets to
the Indian subcontinent (mainly India, Pakistan and Bangladesh). I will
accept feedback only for agents serving those countries.

If you had a good or bad experience with a travel agent, please send me
e-mail so that your experience can be recorded here for the benefit of
other travelers. Participation in documenting our latest experiences is
essential to make this survey useful.
Please include the date (the month and year) of your experience,
so travel agents who show improvements get the credit for it. Also, we
can see who are consistently 'good' agents.
The survey is based on personal experiences only. Travel agents (mostly
desi) who deal with travel to India/Pakistan/Bangladesh/Nepal/Sri Lanka
are surveyed based on actual experiences. This is not a posting for commercial
advertisement for or against any travel agent. In particular, I cannot
and will not accept any responsibility for some travel agent's loss
of business or any damages arising out of this posting.

General Notes: (These will grow as more and more information comes in.)
1. Charging your tickets to a credit card is safer. Many travel agents
charge about 3% to 4% more to use this facility. Ask your agent.
Also insist on getting the credit slip (customer's copy) after you
pay by credit card. This will help you with the paper work with the
credit card companies, Better Business Bureau and so on in case you are
owed a refund and the agent gets nasty. The practice of charging extra
for credit cards may not be legal. You can report it to the local business
authorities and the credit card company but I don't know if they will
(can) do anything. To avoid paying extra on the credit card or for agents
who don't accept cards, you may want to send the payment using the
transaction cheques that credit card companies provide, sometimes without
charging any transaction fee.
2. Some agents charge you full fare if you pay by credit card, and then
reimburse the difference between full fare and discounted fare. But
be cautious.
3. In most cases you need to keep calling the agent to remind him/her to
mail you the tickets in time.
4. If possible, make your own reservations with the airlines directly,
and contact a travel agent just for the tickets. This may not always
work, since airlines may be overbooked during peak periods. Some travel
agents buy blocks of seats from airlines.
5. In case you are just shopping for a price, do not tell the agent about
the reservations you made with the airlines directly. Just get a price
quote. Otherwise you leave a chance to the travel agent to take over the
ticketing without your authorization.
6. Insist that the travel agent mails you the tickets by certified mail
to avoid the inconvenience if tickets get lost in mail.
7. Make sure that the address on your cheque is your current address, or
cross the old address off. This way the agent would know not to mail
the tickets to the old address on cheque.
8. Ask the agent and/or airlines if you need to join the frequent flyer
programme in advance.
9. Don't depend on this survey blindly. Do your homework and shop around
to get a good and safe deal.
10. Plan ahead early enough.
11. If a travel owes you a refund and gives you a hard time about it, you
may try approaching Better Business Bureau. It works sometimes.
12. Check the back of the ticket to see if the ticket was altered by the
agent. In one case, the ticket was originally under a different name, and
the agent had used red ink to emulate the red-carbon-copy. This was
noticeable on the back side of the ticket.
13. Do take the time to send me an e-mail to document your experience.
Please include the items required for the following table and more
about what you went through.
14. If possible, forward a copy of this survey to your agent to make them
aware that they are being watched.
15. Always verify with the airline that the entire trip is confirmed before
you leave. Some travel agents have been known to lie about it. Insist that
he give you confirmed tickets.
16. If possible, before you pay the agent, call the airline and check if
your tickets are confirmed if the agent claims they are. If they aren't,
then give your agent a hard time. If they are, then save the confirmation
number. It comes in useful later if there is a dispute.
17. In case of a dispute with out-of-state travel agents, even if one wins the
case in the courts of one's home state, one still has to move the case to
the courts of the other state and try and collect there. Quite impractical.
18. It *might be* safer if the travel agency has been appointed by "ARC" and
"IATAN" and is a member of "ASTA" and has been in operation for a long
period of time.

Minor hassles, such as 'you need to keep calling the agent to remind to mail
you the tickets' are lumped in good experiences. See the comments column too.
Numbers in square brackets (e.g. [1]) indicate the number of responses since
the last survey posting.
Credit Card Column:
Y means credit card accepted at no extra charge
N means credit card not accepted
R means credit card is accepted with extra charge that is refunded later
X means credit card is accepted with extra charge

CAUTION:
BEWARE OF:
-Airways of India (erstwhile Jupiter Travel) in NY. Took money
but did not send tickets.
-Viceroy Travels (aka Rohan Travels). Gave KLM tickets that the airline
said were stolen. They advertise in India Abroad.
-Speedways International. Got money in advance and gave lots of problems
with the ticket. In one case, sold tickets that the airline classified
stolen.
-Travel Travel Travel/All Points Travel/Par Travel: VERY unreliable. Did
not deliver tickets after getting payment multiple times.
-Magic Travels Inc.: Tickets sold classified as stolen.
-Caravan Travels Inc. (1101 Ave. U, 2nd Fl., Brooklyn, NY 11223): Cashed
cheque and disappeared.
-RIZ Travels (Iselin, NJ). Sold tickets which Delta claimed to be
bought using a stolen credit card in the middle of the journey.
-People who send you email saying they can get you confirmed tickets. Check
with the airline first if there are any seats available at all, or if the
waiting list is open. Never pay before confirming your booking with the
airline.
-Also check out the individual entries for each agent below. Be very
careful when buying tickets from the ones marked unreliable.

I'd like to put in a word for Hari World Travels in Toronto, Canada (which
I believe does not figure in your survey presently). Apart from serving
Canada, they are useful for people living not far from the Canada-US border,
like the Detroit area where I live. They got me tickets the last time I
visited India, and I've just booked tickets with them for my trip this month.
The agent I work with is Asha, very professional and efficient, and also
offers many helpful tips when needed. They get you a pretty good fare, take
credit cards without additional charge, and mail you tickets quite promptly
by courier. They stay fairly busy in general, but that hasn't hurt the quality
of service. They can be reached at

We have bought tickets to India from Asha Telang at Van Ness Travels in
Wahington, DC 202-966-4000 ... most recently December, 1995. She is
friendly, courteous, and personally reliable. They take credit cards,
charge extra for it. Prices are reaonable (around $ 1,350 round trip in
mid-December on Delta or United/emirates). Weakness is that they do not
double check schedules to see if they have changed from the time they made
the reservations. IF I had not called United myself, we might have been
stuck in London on the return because the connection given in our tickets
was no longer valid.
Have also bought tickets from Traveller's choice (Mr. Bakshi) Virginia
in the past ... no problems

We would not do business with Vivek Gupta and others at Travel World
International of Walden, New York, a subsidiary of Greaves Travels. We had
a bad experience with them recently. We feel that we have been mistreated,
lied to, and extorted of extra money. They also attempted to put us in a
very difficult situation where we would have to pay an additional $175 in
cash at the British Airways counter at JFK. A friend of ours intervened on
time (on the departure date) and finally, they withdrew the "not paid in
full" wire message to BA. They did this because we were hesitant to pay the
extra $42. For the extra $42, we never got a receipt after repeated
requests. BA doesn't recognize any such extra charges.
These agents also assured us of confirmation of booking all the way through
and put a confirmation sticker on one part (Calcutta-London) of the ticket,
but BA never recognized such confirmation until after we left USA. We had
to redo the confirmation at the Calcutta BA office.
The whole experience was very stressful and agonizing.

last minute because of the snow (I ended up not doing it). She definitely
ranks the highest among the agents I have dealt with so far in the US.

I just got back from india last week and I used Om Travels
(agent: Kishan) in Santa Clara for purchasing my tickets.
All my travel from San Fransciso to Bangalore on
Singapore Airlines and Indian Airlines went without a hitch.
Kishan was nice to deal with and got me tickets to fly
into bombay and fly out of madras so as to get more time
in india rather than save a few bucks and fly in and out
of the same city. I got his reference from your list and
I would use him again.

My son and a friend travelled to India and Nepal for a 6 week tour the summer
of 1995. The Divecha's worked hard to not only find the least expensive
rates, but made extra effort to arrange meaningful and educational side
experiences. Using air and rail they experienced the hills of the south as
well as urban centers of Bangalore, Madras, Hyderabad. They returned to their
entry city of Bombay, then travelled inland to Nagpur and north to Delhi and
Agra along with other towns and cities and then on to Kashimir. They returned
to Bombay and finished their trip in Goa, off season but great prices and
good experience.
I have recommended this agency to Indian and American friends. All have
experienced the same high level of service that I did.

Com-for Travel of Manhattan, New York. Despite the change of airline
in one leg of the journey (Feb. '96) and an effort to quitely pass the
ticket to me without informing that part of the ticket was not
confirmed, I am inclined not to make any adverse comment against
Mr. Wilson as everything turned out to be ok finally.

him and at that time he did not have the rates. Promised to put our names on

During the past December holidays I was planning to visit India. I
obtained several agnecy names from your survey. I live in Michigan.
I went to several in the Detroit area. My experience with a majority
of them wasn't pleasant.
GITA's Travel---Ms. Gita Pradeep was too busy to answer any of
my questions. I am a first time traveller. She kept me on hold for
a long time when I called. There is nothing more unpleasant than
waiting on the phone for an unfair amount of time. Even after that
ordeal, her prices weren't attractive.
United Travel--- Unfortunately I had even a more unpleasant time
with this agency. Ms. Rita was very rude to me. She wasn't
cooperative either. For example, it seems the agency was only
pushing what they have. They didn't want to search for my
individual needs. I basically recieved the thought: Take what we
have or Get Out. I was very troubled.
TRAVEL NETWORK--- Wow! What can I say. After having such
troublesome times, it was hard to believe I found such a wonderful
agency that I am recommending to all of my friends and family. Mrs.
Geeta Divecha was the one I talked to. Travel Network gave me all
the options that I could possibly to fit my individual needs. They
worked with me until I was satisfied with all the questions I had and
so on. They planned everything and made my first trip to India very
comforting. And comfortable it was because I wasn't worried whether
or not there was a better price somewhere else. The price was
exceptional. They were very kind and they really have PEOPLE

I recently had the oppurtunity of dealing with Aviation Travels in Jersey
City Ph No 201-659-0334.
Since I spoke to them in Dec 1995 I had an oppurtunity to deal with them for
five occasions as we had a marriage in India. They offered me the best rates
on Emirates Airlines as that was the only Airline I was intrested in. As far
as booking was concerned everything was confirmed as mentioned . The person
whom I dealt in Aviation Travels was Anjali who is very polite to deal with
and tried really hard to get all the dates I was looking for.
The best thing I liked was that in almost every case she even told me that
about the cheaper options available on a few other Airlines.
I shopped around a lot and found that they had very cheap rates on Gulf and
Emirates Airlines.
I strongly recommend Aviation travels to all. All the best.

I am an Indian graduate student at Penn State. Using your web page I went
through the process of getting a ticket for India in December-January and
after I returned I very conveniently forgot to send feedback on it.
I think my experience with the above was very good. They were very courteous
and would know my status just by my name (No tapping on computer reqd).
One good recommendation for them.

This is about Time travel and tours, Geeta Ahuja in NY. While, two
of my experiences were good, the third one turned out to be a
disaster. She did not return my calls, couldn't quote any good
fares and just acted as if she didn't want to deal with me at all!
I finally resorted to a different travel agent to get my ticket.
Some agents start off so well and eventually forget that quality
of service should be tops in their mind and should never never be
compromised.

I travelled to India (Seattle-Bangalore and back) in
December 1995; my ticket was booked through Onkar
Travels in Seattle, Washington state (on your list).
I think the contact person's name was Meera.
I found Meera pleasant, efficient and straightforward to
deal with. I had to pay by check rather than credit card,
but she said the check/card acceptance policy varies from
airline to airline. I had no problem whatsoever with my
ticketing during the trip, and recommend Onkar with
absolutely no reservations.
