"Stepping into the next millenium"

They are all plans to greet the new millenium, come January 1^st, 2000. If you haven't decided on how to celebrate Y2K, why not consider the option of returning to your alma mater for a walk down memory lane and relieve your youth in the last decades of the past millenium

The 5^th International Medical Congress organised by PeMSAA and the Faculty of Medicine will be held from July 21^st - 23^rd, 2000 in Kandy, Sri Lanka

Here are some of the highlights of the congress decided so far:

At last, Neil Halpe's idea of bringing back the PeMSAA congress to the premises of our alma mater has been successful. This time the congress will be held at the Peradeniya University Premises. Most of the events will be arranged at the new preclinical block of the Faculty of Medicine.

4^th Congress (16^th-18^th Dec 1998)

"Technology for Health Care Beyond A.D. 2000"

This was held in collaboration with the Faculty of Medicine, University of Peradeniya at the beautiful surroundings of the Plant Genetic Resources Centre (PGRC) Auditorium, Gannoruwa, Peradeniya, Sri Lanka
The congress was chaired by alumnus Prof. Shanthi Mendis

Day one of the congress started off with a grand ceremonial opening with His Excellency Helmut van Edig, the Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany, as chief guest
A most informative & decorative congress lecture was delivered by Dr. Lal Gunasekera, Consultant Neurosurgeon, The Princess Royal Hospital, West Sussex, UK

Young Researchers Forum was held with great success. Prof. Michael Sedgwick, Professor of Clinical Neurological Sciences at the University of Southampton, UK made useful comments on the presented research projects
Day two of the congress saw a most innovative scientific program with following workshops held concurrently at the Teaching Hospitals Kandy and Peradeniya and the Faculties of Medicine and Science

Cardiac rehabilitation
Advances in bahavioural therapy
Transplantation
Pain control
Advances in Neurosciences
PCR in the diagnosis of infections
Evidence-based medicine
Dialysis techniques

There was a well attended, informative, multidisciplinary free paper session.
Inaugural PeMSAA lecture was delivered by Prof. S.N. Arseculartne, Professor Emeritus, University of Peradeniya
The events of the day three included 3 seminars, which addressed controversial issues on the implications of advances in technology such as the artificial creation of life and the care of the elderly
Alumni Dr. Gamini Buthpitiya and Dr. Vasanthi Thevanesam organised the workshops

Statement of the mission of PeMSAA

"The mission of PeMSAA is to assist the Faculty to maintain the highest standards in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education in Peradeniya. This mission will be carried out by mobilising the resources of the alumni of the Peradeniya Medical School. A constitution for PeMSAA and relevant bank accounts have been set up. Legal procedures have been initiated to register PeMSAA under the companies act of Sri Lanka."
