LTTE FIRES AT CIVILIANS (99 Jul 28)

More than hundred civilian refugees returning home after being held up in Vavuniyava for more than one and half months have been fired at with mortars by the LTTE. As a result the refugees had no alternative but to return to the refugee camps in Vavuniyava.

There have been more than two thousand in the Vavuniyava camps from the uncleared areas in Vanniya and the army had allowed them to return to their homes on humanitarian grounds on their request. They were sent in a convoy of busses up to the forward defence lines. As the refugees were about to cross the defence line the LTTE has fired at them.

The refugees who were keen to go back to their homes to start a new life have been forcefully sent back to the refugee camps by the LTTE. It is clear that the LTTE does not want the people to live their normal lives, as they are interested only in gaining power in the so-called Tamil homeland.
