PA WINS SPPC (99 Jun 16)

The PA won the Southern Province Provincial Council elections held on 10th June. Out of the 53 seats the PA won 25 while the UNP won 21 seats. The balance 7seats went to the JVP. With the 2 bonus seats the PA gets a total of 27 seats, which is one less than the number of seats that the opposition has won.

As a percentage of the total votes valid the PA, the UNP and the JVP received 44.9, 39.12 and 12.28 respectively. As in the other provinces a large number of people have decided not to cast their votes indicating that they are not happy with the present party system. Both the UNP and the PA have lost some of their votes and it is very likely that this trend will continue in the future.

The people are in need of an alternative system but so far no body has come out with a viable alternative.
