NO LTTE ACTIVITIES IN THAILAND (99 Apr 14)

Thailand has assured Sri Lanka that it would not allow the LTTE to use its territory for any activities against the Sri Lankan government. The assurance has been given by Mr. M. R. Sukhumbhand Paribatra, the deputy minister of foreign affairs who visited Sri Lanka to Mr. Lakshman Kadirgamar.

Earlier there were reports that the LTTE was using Thailand as a source to buy arms and as a transit point to smuggle them to Sri Lanka.

The deputy foreign minister has also told Mr. Kadirgamar that Thailand was keen to help Sri Lanka in dealing with activities harmful to the integrity of the country.

Sri Lankan government should have canvassed at least all the Asian countries for their help to curb the activities of the LTTE. However none of the UNP and the PA governments did have a systematic way of counteracting the LTTE propaganda and as a result the latter has taken the upper hand.
