DEATH OF VEN. ANANDA MAITHRIYA THERO (98 Jul 22)
It is with profound sorrow, we announce the death of Ven. Balangoda Ananda Maithriya Thero. The Ven. Thero was 102 years old at the time death.
Born on 1896 August 26, he was ordained a Buddhist Bhikku on 1911 Marc 02. The Ven. Thero received upasampada on 1916 July 14. Having entered Ananda Vidyalaya in 1919 to study English the Thero was appointed a teacher of the same school in 1922. Ven. Ananda Maithriya Thero was in the forefront in establishing Nalanda Vidyalaya, and it was the Thero who named the school as Nalanda.
The Ven. Thero has held many positions such as Professor of Mahayana Buddhism and Vice Chancellor at Vidyodaya. The Thero was the first President of the Amarapura Maha Sangha Sabha and was awarded the " Agga Maha Panditha Upadhi" by the Mianmar government.
The cremation will take place on Thursday the 24th at Balangoda. May the Ven. Thero attain Nibbana.
