The HUMAN GENETICS UNIT

UNDERGRADUATE

The undergraduate curriculum of the faculty of medicine is module based. During the first four terms of the 5 year course, students follow an introductory basic sciences (IBS) course. The anatomy component of the IBS comprise of the following courses:
Gross Anatomy,
Microscopic Anatomy,
Embryology,
Neuro Anatomy, and
Basic Medical Genetics.

The methods of teaching include lectures, tutorials, gross anatomy and neuro-anatomy dissections, the anatomy museum, and microscopic anatomy practicals.

Students are evaluated at an end of term (held at the beginning of the following term) gross anatomy spot tests and a common MCQ test, testing knowledge in all areas. A special microscopic anatomy spot test is held at the beginning of the fourth term. The IBS main examination is held at the end of the fourth term. This includes a MCQ paper, a Structure Essay Paper and a Viva. A Gold Medal and Distinctions are awarded at the end of this test.

The IBS course is followed by 14 modules. The department of anatomy takes part in planning and carrying out teaching activities in these modules. These activities include lectures, problem bases learning sessions, fixed learning modules, seminars, etc.

POST GRADUATE

Post graduate medical education in Sri Lanka is conducted by the Post Graduate Institute of Medicine (PGIM), University of Colombo. The Department is represented in the Board of Study of Surgery, Ophthalmology, Dental Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynaecology and Radiology courses of the PGIM. A range of courses are conducted by the Department for students following these courses as well as as other courses of the PGIM.

PARAMEDICAL

The department participates in the following paramedical teaching programs: Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy, Radiography, ECG Technicians and Pharmacists.
