High flying treasurer

Most of the Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) exco members were clueless in the past few days as to how the SLC Treasurer Nuski Mohamed represented SLC at the Development Committee meeting of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) meeting in Dhaka, Bangladesh on Saturday.

The exco which met last week gave approval for SLC President Jayantha Dharmadasa who is also the president of the ACC to represent them at this meeting and even on Monday were under the impression that Dharmadasa had taken part in the meeting.

However, it was Mohamed, who has shown a penchant for foreign trips in recent times, who had attended the meeting.

ACC Development Manager Bandula Warnapura confirmed Mohamed’s participation in Saturday’s meeting instead of Dharmadasa.

According to proper protocol, if the President was unable to attend a meeting he should have informed the SLC exco and assigned one of the two vice presidents of the SLC or the Secretary to represent SLC at the meeting as the Treasurer’s duty is to handle finances.

SLC Chief Executive Ashley de Silva was unaware that Mohamed had represented SLC at the meeting when “Daily Mirror” contacted him on Monday evening, but later called back to confirm that Mohamed had in fact taken part in the meeting. He claimed that the President who was unable to attend the meeting had assigned Mohamed to represent him. De Silva added that no exco approval was necessary for Mohamed to take part in the meeting as the entire cost of taking part in such meetings are met by the ACC and Mohamed was anyway a Director of the ACC.

However, it was not clear why President Dharmadasa had to seek SLC approval for his trip in the first place at the last exco meeting.

SLC exco member Shammi Silva was also in the dark about the development when “Daily Mirror” contacted him, but also called back to say Mohamed had taken part in the meeting without their knowledge, but added that it shouldn’t be a big issue as SLC doesn’t have to meet the cost of the trip.

Mohamed is a financial expert and his role at a meeting which had nothing to do with finances is questionable, one exco member told “”. He pointed out that Mohamed had travelled to several ACC and ICC meetings in past though there was no actual necessity for him to go. He said the recent ACC meeting in Singapore and ICCs meeting in Dubai as examples and claimed that Mohamed was not even part of those meetings as only the President or Secretary are allowed into such meetings. However, at the ICC annual conference in Melbourne, Mohamed had attended the meetings, as the President and another representative were allowed in.
