The Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU) yesterday condemned Malaka Silva’s attack on the Army Major and described him as a “hooligan” whose actions had reflected badly on the government.

“Everybody knows he is Minister Mervyn Silva’s son. But this is not the first instance that he has behaved in such a way. The law should be strictly enforced for actions like this,” JHU Central Committee Member the Ven. Hedigalle Wimalasara Thera said.

The Thera said the JHU looked down on the incident with disgust.

When a journalist asked him whether the failure by the police to arrest Malaka Silva against the backdrop of the visit to Sri Lanka by UN officials might send an adverse message regarding the law enforcement mechanism in Sri Lanka, JHU President the Ven. Athuraliye Rathana Thera said he should not be getting special protection simply because he is a minster’s son.

“If he is getting protection by using ministerial powers then that is wrong. The government should act speedily to enforce the law regarding this matter. However this incident does not concern human rights,” said Ven. Rathana Thera.
