The Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU) yesterday challenged the priests of the Munneswaram Kali Kovil in Chilaw to telecast the animal sacrifice live if it were such a holy ceremony as the Kovil priests’ claimed.

Issuing a statement, JHU Leader Omalpe Sobitha Thera said, “This act will not bring peace or harmony to any religion. But at the same time it is sad that security has been provided for the killing of these animals. The All Ceylon Hindu Congress has admitted that this animal sacrifice is not a ritual of the Hindu religion but a myth existing amongst the people. So despite all the protests raised by various groups against this act, the Kovil priests are determined to go ahead with it and claim that it is a very holy religious ceremony, we challenge them to allow the media to telecast this live, so that the public would get an opportunity to witness this event which is one of their rites,” the press release said.

The press release added that the public had a right to know what was going on, and urged the authorities that had provided security to enable the Kovil priests to go ahead with the animal sacrifice to safeguard the right of the public to information. Meanwhile, the JHU also urged President Mahinda Rajapaksa to intervene and stop the sacrifice.
