Certain faculties including Engineering and Medicine would face a quandary, if a comparatively higher number of freshers entered university this year, Committee of Vice Chancellors and Directors (CVCD) President Professor Susirith Mendis said yesterday.

“The situation in universities with concern to the 2012 students’ intake will depend on the pending Supreme Court decision. If the chosen formula involves the intake of a higher number of students in comparison to previous years, certain faculties will be compelled to make provisions to include the extra number,” Prof. Mendis said.

However, he also stated certain disciplines including Science, were geared to accept a higher student intake than previous years if the need arose, as there were sufficient vacant positions in those faculties in almost every university.

University entrance this year was delayed following the complications that arose in the zscores. Earlier this week, the University Grants Commission (UGC) informed the Supreme Court that it would not decide on admitting new students to universities until the issue relating to Zscore was settled.
