We approve amendments to the Act : Theras

In a special statement to the Prime Minister and Buddha Sasana Minister D.M. Jayaratne, the Mahanayakes of the three Nikayas have called upon them to bring the amendments to the Buddhist Temporalities Act to Parliament without delay.

In this letter by the Mahanayake theras, they have stated that the Prime Minister had said in Parliament, published in the newspapers on July 5 2012, that there was no agreement among the Mahanayake theras on this amendment.

The Mahanayake's stated that these amendments that were discussed by a committee had been studied by them and the amendments had been unanimously approved by the Mahanayakes. The statement further said these amendments to the Act had been handed over to the Buddha Sasana Ministry. They also pointed out that the Mahnayake's of Asgiriya and Malwatta had in fact handed over the amendments to the President over a year ago. The Thera's also said a copy had been handed over to the Prime Minister.

The Thera's further call for these amendments to be brought before Parliament as early as possible.

The statement is signed by the Mahanayake of Asgiriya Venerable Udugama Kirthi Sri Rathanapala Buddharakitha Thera, the Mahanayake of Malwatta Venerable Tibbotuwawe Sri Sumangala Thera, The Ramanaya Nikaya Maha Nayake Venerable Weweldeniya Medalankara Thera and Mahanayake of Amarapura Nikaya Venerable Dauldena Sri Gnanissara Thera.
