North Central Province Civil Appellate Court yesterday ordered Deputy Minister Duminda Dissanayake to pay Rs.300,000 to the Swarnapali Balika Vidyalaya authorities for the use of the school grounds for a carnival during Poson Poya period. In the case filed by School Development Society Secretary Priyantha Fernando, Judge Sarath Gamini Edirisinghe said this fanfare appeared to be meant solely for money-making purposes, but not to mark Poson Poya.

The Judge ordered Mr. Dissanayake who is the Chairman of Apegama Development Foundation to credit Rs.150,000 to the account of the School Development Society by today, and the rest of the money within five days after conclusion of the fanfare called ‘Gajasiha Udanaya’.

The Deputy Minister, Apegama Foundation Secretary Nandana Lokubarana, North Central Province Chief Minister’s secretary Ananda Kularatne and Deputy Minister Duminda Dissanayake’s secretary were the respondents to the petition.

They were ordered to hand over the playground to the petitioners in perfect condition after the carnival. The Judge warned them that they would be liable for contempt of court if they violated the court order.

Senior Counsel Karunaratne Herath appeared for the petitioners while Counsel Mahesh Kotuwella, Kalinga Ravindra and Ravi Dissanayake appeared for the respondents.
