UNP Deputy Leader Karu Jayasuriya who has announced his candidacy to contest for the post of party leader yesterday said his dream was to form a UNP government and to put a stop to the injustice and corruption prevailing in the country.

Addressing a gathering at the launch of his official website, www.karujayasuriya.lk, Mr. Jayasuriya said the country was at a critical stage when the UNP should make a comeback. “My dream is to form a UNP government. We have a responsibility to promote democracy, economic development and create a dignified society in which the wealth of the country is distributed to everyone," Mr. Jayasuriya said.

"Today we live in a country where you are hit with iron rods and tear gas if you express your opinion. It is hard to find a job, to go to a police station to address your grievances and the society is plagued by various political influences. We as the Opposition have a duty to stand up against what’s wrong," he said.

The website launch was attended by UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe along with UNP members, diplomats and academics. Mr. Jayasuriya in his address thanked Mr. Wickremesinghe and other guests for their participation and support.

He said it was necessary to put a stop to government corruption and injustice and to give people the fairness they deserved. Those like Sarath Fonseka who fought against terrorism are still behind bars and it is our responsibility to make a change, he said.

“There are those who have been wronged and those who do not have the means to earn a living and strive hard to meet ends, unlike some who abuse resources. These people need our help and we should support them,” he said.
