Attaining AALCO goals needs cooperation: Hakeem

Minister of Justice and SLMC Leader Rauff Hakeem stressed the need for cooperation and working together to achieve the common goals of the Asian - African Legal Consultative Organization (AALCO) while finding solutions to unresolved issues on many aspects in the near future.

The minister made this point speaking at the opening ceremony of the AALCO conference in the UN headquar ters New York on Monday.

Introductory remarks were made by the Secretary General Prof. Dr. Rahamath Mohammad following the opening remarks made by the President of AALCO.

The meeting attended by representatives of member states had been jointly organised by AALCO and ILC.

Sri Lanka was one of the founder members of this organisation and its four sessions were held in Sri Lanka since its inception.

Brief addresses were delivered by delegates on Institutional legal issues, crime of aggression, expulsion of aliens and of persons in the event of disasters.

Significant contributions in the field of the law of sea, refugee law, rights of migrant workers, international criminal cour t, illegal trafficking of women and children etc., had been made by the organisation in the recent past.

Sri Lanka was one of the founder members of this organisation and its four sessions were held in Sri Lanka since its inception. Justice Minister Rauff Hakeem had been unanimously elected its President at the 50th Annual Session of the AsianAfrican Legal Consultative Organisation (AALCO) held in July, this year in Colombo.

Relevant events will be concluded on November 4, 2011. The Asian- African Legal Consultative Organization (AALCO) has its Secretariat in New Delhi, India.
