Resettlement and Disaster Relief Services Minister Rishad Bathiudeen told Parliament yesterday that Sarath Fonseka was the chief obstacle to resettle the Internally Displaced People (IDP) living in relief centres in the North.

The Minister said Fonseka had advised Security Forces to continuously keep around 280,000 IDPs in welfare centres. The Government was able to accelerate the resettlement once Fonseka resigned from his post.

He said Fonseka was a major obstacle to speedy the implementation of resettlement process.

He said only 26,000 IDPs are living in welfare centres where 92,000 IDPs were accommodated one month ago.

The Government has made arrangements to resettle all IDPs before the end of January 30, he said.

The Minister was responding to an oral question raised by UNP MP Ravi Karunanayake.
