Looking after the northern IDPs has become big business for certain VIPs in government, the UNP alleged yesterday.

UNP Chairman Gamini Jayawickrema Perera told The Island that in the name of providing for the suffering IDP’s, these persons were even demanding and obtaining commissions on each egg, supplied to the refugee camps.

"A commission of three rupees, is collected from the supplier, for each egg sold to the authorities. This has been going on for many months now," he alleged. "You can calculate how much it works out to, on a daily basis. The commission game applies to all IDP requirements, provided."

With the A9 being re-opened, in the name of freedom of movement, certain VIP’s are making "big bucks" there as well, Perera alleged. "Fifty rupees is collected every time each of the 50 buses enters the A9 highway. Multiply fifty by fifty and that into the number of trips a bus makes a day and you can arrive at interesting figures."

There were nearly 300,000 IDP’s, when the war ended on May 18,this year.
