EPDP vows to go ahead with election campaign

Mar 5 (IL) Naming the recent killings as a 'desperate act by a desperate organisation', the Eelam People's Democratic Party (EPDP) yesterday vowed to go ahead in contesting the election as they had the support of the people despite a series of disturbances carried out by the LTTE.

Senior EPDP Member K. Vigneswaran demanded the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) to take equal responsibility for these incidents as they claim to represent the LTTE. "We are not surprised about these incidents, and they are definitely the work of the LTTE," he said. He categorically dismissed the possibility of some other interested group carrying out such crimes including killings.

He also said that his party had made representations to the Elections Commissioner Dayananda Dissanayake regarding provision of security to EPDP candidates. "Its now upto the Elections Commissioner to act on the matter," Dr. Vigneswaran said.

He also charged that the LTTE was now in fear of the people's verdict which could be different to what they were expecting initially.
