Measures taken to avoid campus violence

Oct 4 (InfoLanka) The Administration of Colombo University and Law Faculty Students Union (LFSU) were pondering on measures to enhance the security to avoid future violence.

LFSU President, Ravindra Mayu Rangana said that they held talks with the Administration regarding the security measures to the university. "We requested the Vice Chancellor to take timely moves on this issue. We could expect these types of incidents in the future too, because of the upcoming students' election," he said.

Mr. Mayu Rangana said theirs was the only university where the Inter-University Students' Federation has no power.

"They try to gain it by violent means. The recent clashes were the first violence unleashed by them on us. We were not satisfied with the way our university administration works regarding the security," he said.

He alleged these incidents were closely connected with the violence at Jayewardenepura University and there was a possibility of spreading this to other universities.

University Vice Chancellor, Prof. Tilak Hettiarachchi said he would make every effort for the security of the university. "We discussed about this and I have directed to post two security personnel to the gate facing planetarium".
