National Freedom Front leader Wimal Weerawansa yesterday (March 14) accused the US Embassy in Colombo of providing wrong and distorted facts to the US State Department. This was part of a sinister campaign to destabilise the country and pave the way for US intervention here, he said.

Addressing the media in Colombo, he said the US was campaigning in support of the opposition. The UNP and the JVP would benefit from the US strategy, he said.

Referring to the annual Human Rights Report 2009 released by the US Department of State, Weerawansa said the US had depicted Sri Lanka as a country run by the Rajapaksa brothers.

A smiling former JVP heavyweight said that earlier a section of the international community had portrayed Sri Lanka as a Sinhala majority country but now they referred to us as the Rajapaksa brothers’ country.

Weerawansa said the US had turned a blind eye to LTTE atrocities during the war

He alleged that defeated Opposition presidential candidate Sarath Fonseka’s campaign for the January 26 presidential election had been fully backed by the US and other interested parties bent on effecting a regime change in Sri Lanka.
