Several sporting stars in the fray for polls

Several former and present sporting stars who have brought fame to the country contesting the upcoming parliamentary polls from the ruling and opposition parties.

A majority of them have decided to contest under the ticket of the ruling UPFA.

Among them is Susanthika Jayasinghe, who won silver in the women's 200 m event at the 2000 Olympics. She will contest from Kegalle district.

Star cricket Sanath Jayasuriya has already announced that he would contest from Matara.

So is former Test cricketer Pramodya Wickremasinghe.

Vice captain of Sri Lanka's cricket team Muttiah Muralitharan will be a ruling party candidate from Kandy district.

Meanwhile, former skipper and ex-MP Arjuna Ranatunga says he is yet to decide from which party he would contest the April 08 polls.

He is presently holding talks with the opposition UNP and the JVP and a decision is expected by the weekend.

Former Test cricketer Hashan Tilakaratne will contest from Colombo on the UNP ticket.
