Far to go to stop the boats

Oct 1 (TA) THE return of 46 Sri Lankan asylum-seekers to their homeland, many with Australian-funded "reintegration" payments of up to $3000 in their pockets, is a sign that offshore detention is working as a deterrent for those who believe that life at home is not impossible, after all. The fact that the men opted to return rather than languish on Nauru raises questions about whether they were genuine or economic refugees to start with. It's an important point because more than 3500 Sri Lankans more..

Divineguma concentrates power in the hands of minister Basil Rajapaksa

It was not so long ago that the 18th Amendment was steamrollered through parliament, followed by the infamous Expropriation Bill. The labeling of these pieces of legislation as ‘urgent,’ thereby shortening more..

On the single issue debate, a clarification

Oct 2 (CT) I do not think I have any real disagreement with Professor Kumar David on the idea of a single-issue election. For no fault of his own, but solely due to inadequacies in my expression, he seems to have construed my term “multi-issue” to mean the entire gamut of social, political and economic challenges that confront us, to be addressed in one stroke. When I wrote the brief comment I did, it was furthest from my intentions underestimate the primacy of the Executive Presidency (EP) more..

History repeats first as Tragedy, then as Farce

Oct 2 (LB) In the hierarchy of power, the political class does not come under the purview of the “general” law. Though in theory all individuals and groups are equal in the face of the Constitution, there are many exceptions and omissions made to the rule that, in practice, the social and political VIP is privileged at the expense of the commoner. We need not be alarmed at this for if one is not safeguarded and advantaged by it, then there is no reason whatsoever why more..
